Course Descriptions

Spanish 1

Spanish 1 is a year long course. Students begin their introduction to Spanish by focusing on the four key areas of foreign language study: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.  Students should expect to be actively engaged in their own language learning, become familiar with common vocabulary terms and phrases, comprehend  grammar patterns, participate in simple conversations and respond appropriately to basic conversational prompts, compare cultural practices, perspectives of various Spanish speaking countries.   Grade level: 9 and 10 

Spanish 2

Spanish 2 studies the Spanish language and culture and how the two coincide. Spanish 2 students build upon the foundations and functions of the language established in Spanish 1 and become more immersed with some of the cultural elements. The emphasis is based on development of vocab, listening, speaking, reading, writing, and soft skills while promoting meaningful language practice and understanding of culture.
Prerequisite: Passing grades in both Spanish 1A and 1B  Grade level: 10, 11 and 12 

Spanish 3 ( DUAL CREDIT)

Spanish 3 Dual credit is a year long course.  The focus in class is on using Spanish to exchange real-life information and ideas, and on the functional grammar and vocabulary to accomplish this. The class will realize this focus through the four traditional skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. It will also include an introduction to Hispanic culture.
Prerequisite: 2  years of High school Spanish   Grade level: 11 or 12  

Spanish for Spanish Heritage speakers 

The Spanish Heritage class curriculum will be focused on building upon students' existing Spanish language knowledge by honing their grammar skills, expanding vocabulary related to diverse cultural contexts, exploring the nuances of different Spanish dialects, and the sociocultural aspects of the Hispanic experience, while providing opportunities to discuss and reflect on their personal heritage and identity within the larger Spanish-speaking world. Reading authentic Spanish narrative stories. 
Prerequisite: High Intermediate or advanced in the Spanish language   Grade level: 9, 10, 11 and 12
