Dear Families,
The holiday season is in full swing at KMS, and we have lots of exciting activities happening! Change for Change has officially begun—this fundraiser supports East End Providers, and the Advisory class that collects the most change will earn a donut party. Our Advisory door-decorating competition is also underway, adding an extra touch of holiday cheer throughout the halls. Snow Fitness Day forms are now available outside the office and must be returned with payment by December 18th. This event is a regular school day, and students are required to attend either at Magic Mountain or at school. Activity options include skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. In addition, our 6th grade band will hold a special assembly this Tuesday during Advisory. We’re looking forward to a festive, fun-filled few weeks with our students!
Here are a few specifics:
English: In English, we will read chapters 11-12 in A Long Walk to Water and begin filling out our evidence tracker handouts for the Response to Literature essays that students will complete. Last week students practiced the skills of an introductory paragraph, which means we will learn all about the elements of a body paragraph: premise, introduction to evidence + evidence, and justification. Understanding the evidence-based writing framework will help students master the art of literary analysis. Students have until Friday of this week to turn in their Understanding Tag assignments or to complete the Chapters 1-3 Quiz for A Long Walk to Water. After Friday, I will no longer accept submissions for these.
Math: This week we will work with ratios. We’ll resize shapes and determine their scale factor. We’ll also explore how ratios are used in real life. Our Chapter 4 test will be next week, right before the long break. Missing and incomplete assignments can still be turned in. Please let me know if you have questions.
Social Studies: During the week of December 8th, students will continue building their understanding of the Mayan civilization. We will focus on completing notes, practicing key vocabulary, and working through a couple of related worksheets. Students will also be introduced to the Mayan math system and will have opportunities to practice using it. Please encourage your student to review their notes and vocabulary at home throughout the week. This will help reinforce what we are learning in class and prepare them for the upcoming quiz. We are planning to hold the quiz on December 18th or 19th, prior to Christmas break. Thank you for your support!
Science: This week we will be doing a mini unit on the Water Cycle. We will take notes and complete a lab on precipitation. Reminder, any missing work is due December 19th for the quarter.
PACK: This week we will begin our Persuasion Presentation. Rolling into Christmas seemed like the perfect time to teach the kids the art of persuasion and let them hone their skills. This assignment has a hard deadline. If their assignment is not complete and turned in by the Monday or Tuesday (of their respective first day back to PACK) they will get, at best, 50%. I will be reminding them of that all week, so they will not have any excuses for not having it complete. Let me know if you have questions or concerns.
STEM: Students need to study for their Semester 1 Exam! This will be a closed-note test, and I strongly recommend that students study each night to prepare and build strong academic habits. B-Day students will test on Monday, December 15th, and A-Day students will test on Tuesday, December 16th. Every student has a copy of the study guide, and it is also posted on Canvas. Students may also use GimKit and BoomCards to help them review. If your family will be leaving early for vacation, please make arrangements for your student to stay after school this week to take the exam. On Monday and Tuesday, students will build Rube Goldberg Machines and are welcome to bring materials from home if they wish. On Wednesday and Thursday, we’ll be looking for simple machines in Disney’s Meet the Robinsons. Students may bring a pillow/blanket and a snack; these items must remain in lockers or stored under the tables in Mrs. Hyatt’s room during the school day so they do not disrupt other classes. ¡La temporada navideña está en pleno apogeo en KMS y tenemos muchísimas actividades emocionantes! "Cambio por Cambio" ha comenzado oficialmente: esta recaudación de fondos apoya a East End Providers, y la clase de Asesoría que recaude más cambio ganará una fiesta de donas. Nuestro concurso de decoración de puertas para Asesoría también está en marcha, añadiendo un toque extra de alegría navideña a los pasillos. Los formularios del Día de Ejercicios en la Nieve ya están disponibles afuera de la oficina y deben entregarse con el pago antes del 18 de diciembre. Este evento es un día escolar regular y los estudiantes deben asistir ya sea en Magic Mountain o en la escuela. Las opciones de actividades incluyen esquí, snowboard, raquetas de nieve y esquí de fondo. Además, nuestra banda de 6.º grado tendrá una asamblea especial este martes durante la sesión de Asesoría. ¡Esperamos unas semanas festivas y divertidas con nuestros estudiantes!
Aquí hay algunos detalles:
Inglés: En inglés, leeremos los capítulos 11 y 12 de Un Largo Camino Hacia el Agua y comenzaremos a completar las hojas de seguimiento de evidencia para los ensayos de Respuesta a la Literatura que los estudiantes completarán. Si no la completan y entregan antes del lunes o martes (de su respectivo primer día de regreso a PACK), obtendrán, como máximo, un 50 %. Cada estudiante tiene una copia de la guía de estudio, que también está publicada en Canvas. También pueden usar GimKit y BoomCards para repasar. Si su familia se va de vacaciones antes de tiempo, por favor, hagan arreglos para que su estudiante se quede después de clases esta semana para presentar el examen. El lunes y el martes, los estudiantes construirán máquinas de Rube Goldberg y pueden traer materiales de casa si lo desean. El miércoles y el jueves, buscaremos máquinas simples en la película "Conoce a los Robinsons" de Disney. Los estudiantes pueden traer una almohada/manta y un refrigerio; estos artículos deben permanecer en los casilleros o debajo de las mesas en el salón de la Sra.
