Dear Families,
What a great start to the year we’ve had! Our Bulldogs are ready for Quarter 2, and we’re here to support them every step of the way. Here are a few upcoming events and important dates to be aware of:
Quarter 2 Begins Today! Now that students are familiar with KMS expectations, expectations will increase. Students should be mindful of deadlines and take ownership of their learning. Principal Michelli sent an email to all families last week with more specific information to help parents be informed of district wide policy.
6th Grade Parent Meeting, Thursday, October 23rd at 7:30 pm in the KMS Commons: We’ll discuss the transition to middle school, classroom expectations, discipline procedures, and answer any questions you may have. We look forward to seeing you there!
Parent-Teacher Conferences, Tuesday, October 28th, from 5:30–7:30 pm: conferences will be open house style. Families should pick up report cards from their student’s advisory teacher, then visit with the teachers they feel they need to see. To ensure all families have the opportunity to connect, please keep each conversation to 5 minutes or less.
Dress-Up Day, Thursday, October 30th: Students may dress up, but the school's dress code still applies, and no masks are allowed. Blow-up costumes are fine but must be deflated during class so students can sit at their desks.

Here are a few specifics:
English: Welcome to a new quarter! In English, we will be wrapping up our Watsons Go to Birmingham unit this week. Students will explore writing with multiple voices through a creative poetry activity. We are also beginning our evidence-based writing unit, which will lay the foundation for future explanatory and argumentative essays. Writing expectations will become increasingly rigorous as the year progresses, and for many students, this style of writing will be a new challenge. Staying focused, engaged, and persistent will be key to their success. I’m excited to see students stretch their thinking, grow as writers, and take pride in their progress!

Math: This week we will work with fractions, decimals, and percents. We'll convert between all three and use a percent ruler to help us find the percent of a number. If students are struggling with adding and subtracting fractions, I'm happy to help after school or send them home with practice problems. Let me know if you have questions.

Social Studies: This week, we’ll be diving into a fun project all about climate zones! Students will have time each day in class to work on their projects, which will be due Wednesday, October 29th or 30th. To help them feel confident and prepared (especially for the test!), please take a few minutes at home to review their climate notes together. A little review goes a long way! 🌎☀️❄️

PACK: This week we are watching Social Dilemma (on Netflix). It is a documentary about social media and what it has evolved into including the dangers of it. This is tying into our Internet Safety class.

STEM: Mrs. Hyatt will be out on Monday and Tuesday this week. Students will work on gear calculations and learn to identify 1st, 2nd, and 3rd class levers. Students and parents can email Mrs. Hyatt with any questions or concerns.

¡Qué excelente comienzo de año hemos tenido! Nuestros Bulldogs están listos para el segundo trimestre y estamos aquí para apoyarlos en cada paso del camino. Aquí les presentamos algunos eventos próximos y fechas importantes que deben tener en cuenta:
¡El segundo trimestre comienza hoy! Ahora que los estudiantes están familiarizados con las expectativas de KMS, las expectativas aumentarán. Los estudiantes deben ser conscientes de las fechas límite y responsabilizarse de su aprendizaje. La directora Michelli envió un correo electrónico a todas las familias la semana pasada con información más específica para ayudar a los padres a mantenerse informados sobre la política del distrito.
Reunión de padres de 6.º grado, jueves 23 de octubre a las 19:30 h en el salón común de KMS: Hablaremos sobre la transición a la secundaria, las expectativas del aula, los procedimientos disciplinarios y responderemos a cualquier pregunta que puedan tener. ¡Esperamos verlos allí!
Reuniones de padres y maestros, martes 28 de octubre, de 5:30 p. m. a 7:30 p. m.: Las reuniones serán de puertas abiertas. Las familias deben recoger las boletas de calificaciones del maestro asesor de su hijo y luego visitar a los maestros que consideren necesarios. Para garantizar que todas las familias tengan la oportunidad de conectar, por favor, limiten cada conversación a 5 minutos o menos.
Día de disfraces, jueves 30 de octubre: Los estudiantes pueden disfrazarse, pero se aplica el código de vestimenta de la escuela y no se permiten mascarillas. Se permiten disfraces inflables, pero deben desinflarse durante la clase para que los estudiantes puedan sentarse en sus escritorios.

Aquí les dejo algunos detalles:
Inglés: ¡Bienvenidos a un nuevo trimestre! En inglés, esta semana finalizaremos nuestra unidad "Watsons Go to Birmingham". Los estudiantes explorarán la escritura con múltiples voces a través de una actividad de poesía creativa. También comenzamos nuestra unidad de escritura basada en evidencia, que sentará las bases para futuros ensayos explicativos y argumentativos. Las expectativas de escritura serán cada vez más rigurosas a medida que avance el año, y para muchos estudiantes, este estilo de escritura será un nuevo desafío. Mantenerse concentrados, comprometidos y perseverantes será clave para su éxito. ¡Me emociona ver a los estudiantes desarrollar su pensamiento, crecer como escritores y enorgullecerse de su progreso!

Matemáticas: Esta semana trabajaremos con fracciones, decimales y porcentajes. Realizaremos conversiones entre los tres y usaremos una regla de porcentaje para ayudarnos a encontrar el porcentaje de un número. Si los estudiantes tienen dificultades para sumar y restar fracciones, con gusto los ayudaré después de la escuela o los enviaré a casa con ejercicios de práctica. Avísenme si tienen alguna pregunta.

Estudios Sociales: Esta semana, ¡nos sumergiremos en un proyecto divertido sobre las zonas climáticas! Los estudiantes tendrán tiempo cada día en clase para trabajar en sus proyectos, que deberán entregar el miércoles 29 o 30 de octubre. Para que se sientan seguros y preparados (¡especialmente para el examen!), por favor, dediquen unos minutos en casa a repasar juntos sus apuntes sobre el clima. ¡Un pequeño repaso es muy útil! 🌎☀️❄️
