6th Grade Weekly Update, October 6th – 10th

Dear Families, 

 

A few important reminders as we head into October: 

 

Thank you for supporting your student in staying on top of their learning—we’re excited to finish the quarter strong! 

 

Here are a few specifics: 

 

English:    In English this week, students will be reading Chapters 9-10 of The Watsons Go to Birmingham and complete Entry #4 in their Character Journals. We are pausing all vocabulary and grammar lessons and using our all of our allotted writing instruction time next week to focus entirely on the Personal Narrative Essay, which is the major assessment for Quarter 1. Essays are due on Friday, October 10th. Because the quarter ends on October 17th, students need to prioritize submitting their final drafts on time. The last day essays will be accepted is Thursday, October 16th. Beyond that date, students will receive a zero.  Please encourage your student to use their class time wisely this week and put their best effort into their writing. This is an important opportunity for them to demonstrate everything they’ve learned so far this quarter. Lastly, students have been reminded each week to log their reading minutes in Beanstack. If minutes are not logged, they will receive a zero on their reading log assignment at the end of the quarter.

Math: We will be taking the Chapter 2 test on Wednesday for A-day and Thursday for B-day. A study guide should be coming home at the beginning of the week and will also be available on Canvas. As the end of the quarter approaches, there is still time to get missing assignments completed. Students should let me know if they need to stay after school for help. I'm available any day except Friday this week. 

 

 

Social Studies: The week of October 6th is shaping up to be a busy (and exciting!) one. Students will be turning in their Island Project and taking a 10-question open-note quiz on Earth’s uneven surfaces—so keeping those notes handy will definitely pay off. After that, we’ll shift gears and dive into a short (but fun!) topic on weather and the major climates around the world. A PowerPoint will be posted on Canvas to help guide our learning, so students can follow along at home too. Thanks for your support—it makes a big difference! Let’s get ready for another great week of learning. 

 

 

Science:  We are moving to the end of Unit 1 and covering Heat Transfer. There will be a lab procedures test on Wednesday/Thursday. It is a virtual lab with guided steps. Please remind students if they are absent, they need to check their Science folder for missing assignments.  

 

 

PACK: We are going to be working on some Critical Thinking skills all week. The goal of the lesson is to empower students to feel confident to find answers to their questions, confirm the information, and then apply it. As we move towards the end of the quarter students are being given time at the end of my class period and on Fridays to work on any missing assignment from any class.  

 

 

STEM: This week in STEM we will focus on the wheel and axle through class discussions and LEGOdacta builds. Students who are absent will need to make arrangements to stay after school to complete the builds. Please contact me with any questions or concerns.

Algunos recordatorios importantes para octubre: 

Gracias por apoyar a su estudiante para que se mantenga al día con su aprendizaje. ¡Estamos emocionados de terminar el trimestre con éxito! 

 

Aquí hay algunos detalles: 

 

Inglés: Esta semana, en inglés, los estudiantes leerán los capítulos 9 y 10 de "Los Watson van a Birmingham" y completarán la entrada n.º 4 en sus diarios de personajes. Pausaremos todas las lecciones de vocabulario y gramática y usaremos todo el tiempo asignado para la escritura la próxima semana para enfocarnos por completo en el ensayo de narrativa personal, que es la evaluación principal del primer trimestre. Los ensayos deben entregarse el viernes 10 de octubre. Dado que el trimestre termina el 17 de octubre, los estudiantes deben priorizar la entrega de sus borradores finales a tiempo. El último día para aceptar ensayos es el jueves 16 de octubre. Después de esa fecha, los estudiantes recibirán un cero. Por favor, anime a su estudiante a usar su tiempo de clase sabiamente esta semana y a esforzarse al máximo en su escritura. Esta es una oportunidad importante para que demuestren todo lo que han aprendido hasta ahora este trimestre. Por último, se les ha recordado a los estudiantes que cada semana registren sus minutos de lectura en Beanstack. Si no se registran los minutos, recibirán un cero en su tarea de registro de lectura al final del trimestre.

Matemáticas: Realizaremos el examen del Capítulo 2 el miércoles para el día A y el jueves para el día B. Recibiremos una guía de estudio a principios de semana, que también estará disponible en Canvas. Como se acerca el final del trimestre, todavía hay tiempo para completar las tareas pendientes. Los estudiantes deben avisarme si necesitan quedarse después de clase para recibir ayuda. Estoy disponible cualquier día de esta semana excepto el viernes.

Estudios Sociales: La semana del 6 de octubre promete ser ajetreada (¡y emocionante!). Los estudiantes entregarán su Proyecto de la Isla y realizarán un cuestionario abierto de 10 preguntas sobre las superficies irregulares de la Tierra, así que tener esas notas a mano sin duda será muy útil. Después, cambiaremos de tema y abordaremos un tema breve (¡pero divertido!) sobre el tiempo y los principales climas del mundo. Se publicará una presentación en Canvas para guiar nuestro aprendizaje, de modo que los estudiantes también puedan seguirla en casa. Gracias por su apoyo, ¡es una gran diferencia! Preparémonos para otra gran semana de aprendizaje.

Ciencias: Estamos llegando al final de la Unidad 1 y estamos cubriendo Transferencia de Calor. Habrá un examen de procedimientos de laboratorio el miércoles y jueves. Es un laboratorio virtual con pasos guiados. Por favor, recuerden a los estudiantes que, si faltan, deben revisar su carpeta de Ciencias para ver si tienen tareas pendientes.

PAQUETE: Trabajaremos en habilidades de pensamiento crítico durante toda la semana. El objetivo de la lección es capacitar a los estudiantes para que se sientan seguros de encontrar respuestas a sus preguntas, confirmar la información y luego aplicarla. A medida que nos acercamos al final del trimestre, los estudiantes tendrán tiempo al final de mi clase y los viernes para trabajar en cualquier tarea pendiente de cualquier clase.
