Dear Kimberly School District Families,
As we head into the winter months, we want to ensure you understand how KSD makes decisions regarding school closures and delays and why these decisions are taken so seriously. Our top priority is always the safety of our students and staff, while recognizing that closures can create challenges for families.
To provide transparency, below is an overview of our district’s winter weather decision-making process.
How We Make the Decision
The Night Before
- We monitor multiple weather forecasts and assess storm severity and timing.
- Key roads are driven to anticipate conditions for the following morning.
- We coordinate with neighboring districts and local agencies to gather real-time information.
Early Morning (Beginning at 4:00 AM)
- The Superintendent and Transportation Director drive district routes to evaluate road and visibility conditions firsthand.
- Maintenance crews begin clearing sidewalks, parking lots, and drop-off areas.
- We consult with law enforcement, county road departments, and area superintendents.
Decision Timeframe
- Whenever possible, a final decision is made by 6:30 AM.
- This ensures bus routes, nutrition services, staff planning, and family preparation can occur with adequate notice.
Early Dismissals
- Early release is used only in extreme circumstances, as it can create supervision and safety challenges for many families.
How You’ll Be Notified
When a closure or delay is necessary, KSD will communicate through:
- The district all-call system (phone, text, and email)
- The district website
- District social media channels
- Local radio and television stations
To ensure you receive timely updates, please make sure your contact information is accurate by contacting your child’s school office.
Our Commitment
Every weather-related decision is made with care, collaboration, and student safety at the forefront. Thank you for your understanding, flexibility, and continued partnership as we navigate Idaho’s unpredictable winter weather.
Sincerely,
Luke Schroeder
Superintendent
