Kimberly School District has been taking lots of school precautions this last year ensuring that the students of Kimberly are safe. In recent events, we have seen the Twin Falls County have lots of false threats to the neighboring schools. While the majority of these threats have been on social media, this still leaves a concern for the students and staff of Kimberly, leaving them with lots of questions concerning the school’s stance on school-wide threats.
This past week we have had the privilege to interview Officer Wells on this exact topic, getting a view on the officers here in Kimberly and what they might add to the recent situations that have been occurring. Officer Wells responded, “We take school threats very seriously, & we are doing everything we can every day to make sure we don’t have any threats, making sure we charge them with the right charges if any threats are being spread into the community.”
Officers around the district are working very hard to ensure that our community stays safe and that all threats are being watched and taken care of before they get out of hand and get serious.
Over the summer, Kimberly High School underwent a lot of construction, getting new things put into place, but what was being put in and what does this mean? We interviewed Kimberly High School principal, Mr. Gonzales, and he added, “Over the summer, we had a film put into all the glass windows and doors around the school to ensure the safety of our staff and students. This film protects the windows and doors if an intruder happened to come in and start shooting at the windows/doors. The film acts as an extra barrier so that the glass doesn’t shatter immediately, it would take about 2-3 minutes to take down any of the glass due to this new film, giving the officers plenty of time to get to the school and take down the intruder before they could do any real harm to the students and staff.”
To continue the safety of the students, over the summer, the staff were coming into school, learning how to handle a situation if an intruder came into the buildings. Practicing fake situations, learning how to protect the students of Kimberly, and much more.
Mr. Gonzales ended the interview by stating “If I didn’t feel safe in this school I wouldn’t be here, we take many precautions and have a plan for when a situation like this might happen in Kimberly. Of course, this is something we never want to happen to our school, however, it can happen to anyone at any time, but its best that we ensure to have the right things in place it if that possibility ever becomes a reality.”
