6th Grade Weekly Update
Dear Families,
We had a great first week together! Students learned about school rules, procedures, and expectations while also getting to know their new classes. It has been wonderful meeting all of our new 6th graders! Below are some reminders and upcoming events:
- Syllabi: Please return any signed syllabi forms as soon as possible.
- School Pictures: Thursday, August 28th. Picture forms were sent home last week.
- Advisory Lesson: On Thursday, students will be split by gender for a conversation about basic hygiene. Please email your child’s Advisory teacher with any questions.
- No School: Friday, August 30th and Monday, September 1st (Labor Day weekend).
We’re excited for another great week of learning and growth!
Here are a few specifics:
English: In English this week we will be taking the STAR Reading test to assess student's current reading levels. We will also be wrapping up a couple of assignments from last week that we did not have time to finish. Students need to make sure they submit their 'Letter to My Future Self' assignment on Canvas and their syllabus quiz. At the end of the week, we will begin our Narrative Writing unit. Students will brainstorm ideas for their personal narrative essays and complete a story arc outline. As always, if you have any questions or concerns please don't hesitate to reach out to me.

Math: We will take a Pre-test in math this week. This will help me know what students already know and guide my teaching for the year. The test does not affect students' final grades so no worries if they don't do well. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Social Studies: Week of August 25–29: Exploring & Getting to Know You! This week, we’ll continue building our classroom community with a few more fun “Getting to Know You” activities. We’re also beginning our exciting new unit on maps! 🗺️ Students will start learning how to read and use different types of maps, and we’ll explore how they help us understand the world around us. If you have any paper maps at home—road maps, trail maps, or even old atlases—feel free to share them and chat about them with your student over the next few weeks. Let’s make geography fun and personal!

Science: We are starting Unit 1: States of Matter. The format of Science is one note-taking day, one lab day, and one video day. Absent students will have their missing assignments in their class mailbox. Make-up online assignments will be available in Canvas. Please remind students to check their grades weekly.

PACK: This week in PACK we are doing the final exam so I can see what all your students know and need to learn. We will re-take this exam at the end of the year where we can compare scores and give context to the information they got this year. We are also creating our first presentation. I have made it as simple as possible because I know the majority of students struggle in Public Speaking. This assignment will help them learn to navigate Canvas, PowerPoint, and give them the first opportunity to speak. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me.

STEM: This week students will take a semester pretest. This assessment will not count toward their grade but will help us measure growth at the end of the semester. We’ll also begin exploring the Engineering Design Process and how engineers use it to solve real-world problems. Students will start thinking like engineers as they identify challenges and brainstorm creative solutions. Please reach out with any questions or concerns.

¡Tuvimos una excelente primera semana juntos! Los estudiantes aprendieron sobre las reglas, procedimientos y expectativas de la escuela, a la vez que conocieron sus nuevas clases. ¡Ha sido maravilloso conocer a todos nuestros nuevos alumnos de 6.º grado! A continuación, les presentamos algunos recordatorios y próximos eventos:
Programa de estudios: Por favor, devuelvan los formularios del programa de estudios firmados lo antes posible.
Fotografía escolar: Jueves, 28 de agosto. Los formularios de fotografía se enviaron a casa la semana pasada.
Lección de orientación: El jueves, los estudiantes se dividirán por género para una conversación sobre higiene básica. Por favor, envíen un correo electrónico al profesor de orientación de su hijo/a si tienen alguna pregunta.
No hay clases: Viernes, 30 de agosto y lunes, 1 de septiembre (fin de semana del Día del Trabajo).

Aquí les presentamos algunos detalles:
Inglés: Esta semana, en inglés, realizaremos el examen de lectura STAR para evaluar el nivel actual de lectura de los estudiantes. También terminaremos un par de tareas de la semana pasada que no tuvimos tiempo de terminar. Los estudiantes deben asegurarse de entregar su tarea "Carta a mi yo futuro" en Canvas y su prueba del programa de estudios. Al final de la semana, comenzaremos nuestra unidad de Escritura Narrativa. Los estudiantes intercambiarán ideas para sus ensayos narrativos personales y completarán un esquema de arco argumental. Como siempre, si tienen alguna pregunta o inquietud, no duden en contactarme.

Matemáticas: Esta semana realizaremos un examen previo de matemáticas. Esto me ayudará a saber qué saben los estudiantes y a guiar mi enseñanza durante el año. El examen no afecta las calificaciones finales de los estudiantes, así que no se preocupen si no obtienen un buen resultado. Si tienen alguna pregunta, no duden en contactarme.

Estudios Sociales: Semana del 25 al 29 de agosto: ¡Explorando y conociéndote! Esta semana, continuaremos construyendo nuestra comunidad de clase con algunas actividades divertidas de "Conociéndonos". ¡También comenzamos nuestra nueva y emocionante unidad sobre mapas! 🗺️ Los estudiantes comenzarán a aprender a leer y usar diferentes tipos de mapas, y exploraremos cómo nos ayudan a comprender el mundo que nos rodea. Si tienen mapas impresos en casa (mapas de carreteras, mapas de senderos o incluso atlas antiguos), no duden en compartirlos y conversar sobre ellos con su estudiante durante las próximas semanas. ¡Hagamos que la geografía sea divertida y personal!

Ciencias: Comenzamos la Unidad 1: Estados de la Materia. El formato de Ciencias es un día de apuntes, un día de laboratorio y un día de video. Los estudiantes ausentes recibirán las tareas pendientes en el buzón de su clase. Las tareas de recuperación en línea estarán disponibles en Canvas. Recuerden a los estudiantes que revisen sus calificaciones semanalmente.

PACK: Esta semana en PACK realizaremos el examen final para que pueda ver qué saben y necesitan aprender todos sus estudiantes. Volveremos a realizar este examen al final del año, donde podremos comparar las calificaciones y contextualizar la información obtenida este año. También estamos creando nuestra primera presentación. La he simplificado al máximo porque sé que la mayoría de los estudiantes tienen dificultades para hablar en público. Esta tarea les ayudará a aprender a usar Canvas y PowerPoint y les dará la primera oportunidad de hablar. Si tienen alguna pregunta o inquietud, no duden en contactarme.

STEM: Esta semana, los estudiantes realizarán una prueba presemestral. Esta evaluación no contará para su calificación, pero nos ayudará a medir su progreso al final del semestre. También comenzaremos a explorar el Proceso de Diseño de Ingeniería y cómo lo utilizan los ingenieros para resolver problemas del mundo real.
