Dear Families, 

 

As we move through the winter months, we appreciate your continued support in keeping students engaged and focused at school. Ensure they are dressed for the cold weather. 

 

Due to limited snow at Magic, Snow Fitness Day has been moved to February. More details will be shared once the new date is confirmed. 

Students will attend an assembly on Thursday, January 29 during Advisory to kickstart a school-wide fundraiser beginning on February 2nd. This fundraiser will benefit WHO Lives, an organization whose mission is to end the global water crisis. Students will be bringing home more information this week regarding how one person can make a drastic difference in the world. We encourage you to participate in the discussion! Thanks for your ongoing support.

Here are a few specifics: 

 

English:   In English, we will prioritize completing our essays in response to the novel A Long Walk to Water. Students will also complete their vocabulary packets and begin studying for our upcoming test.  

 

 

Math: We'll start Chapter 6 by exploring fraction division. We'll use visual models and equations to help us solve real-world fraction problems. Students who need to take the Chapter 5 test, or re-take the test, need to schedule a time with me. I would like all of these to be done this week if possible. Please let me know if you have questions. 

 

 

Social Studies: Next week, we will be finishing up several assignments related to the Aztec civilization, including the guided reading and Aztec stories. Students will also have a quiz at the end of the week. Please be sure to review the notes with your student at home. A quiz review will also be posted on Canvas to help students prepare. In class, we will be completing additional test review activities as well. 

 

As a reminder, if you have any spare yarn, you are willing to donate, it would be greatly appreciated. The color does not matter. 

 

Additionally, if you purchase any shoes and have shoeboxes, please hold on to them. We will be using them for a classroom activity in May.

Science: We are moving on to Unit 3, Lesson 4: Types of Forces. We will be learning about pressure and how pressure is used in construction. This will be our last lesson before the open notes test for Unit 3: Lessons 1-4.  

 

 

PACK: This week we will be following up on the job presentation by creating a budget. The students will be given a few normal “adult” bills: A mortgage, cell phone, a weeks worth of groceries, and a car payment. Students will create a budget based on the job they selected and then present this to the class.  

 

 

STEM: In STEM this week, students will complete their truss popsicle bridge projects on Monday and Tuesday. Bridges will be weight tested on Wednesday and Thursday to see how well they handle applied forces. For absent students, instructions for an alternative assignment are available on Canvas. This is a fun, hands-on project that allows students to see forces in action and learn from both successes and failures along the way. Please reach out with any questions.

A medida que avanzamos en los meses de invierno, agradecemos su continuo apoyo para mantener a los estudiantes comprometidos y concentrados en la escuela. Asegúrense de que vistan ropa adecuada para el frío. 

 

Debido a la poca nieve en Magic, el Día de Actividad Física en la Nieve se ha pospuesto para febrero. Se compartirán más detalles una vez que se confirme la nueva fecha.  

 

Los estudiantes asistirán a una asamblea el jueves 29 de enero durante la hora de tutoría para dar inicio a una colecta de fondos escolar que comenzará el 2 de febrero. Esta colecta beneficiará a WHO Lives, una organización cuya misión es poner fin a la crisis mundial del agua. Los estudiantes llevarán a casa más información esta semana sobre cómo una persona puede marcar una diferencia significativa en el mundo. ¡Los animamos a participar en la conversación! Inglés: En inglés, priorizaremos la finalización de nuestros ensayos en respuesta a la novela A Long Walk to Water. Los estudiantes también completarán sus paquetes de vocabulario y comenzarán a estudiar para el próximo examen. 

 

 

Matemáticas: Comenzaremos el Capítulo 6 explorando la división de fracciones. Usaremos modelos visuales y ecuaciones para ayudarnos a resolver problemas de fracciones de la vida real. Los estudiantes que necesiten tomar el examen del Capítulo 5, o volver a tomarlo, deben programar una cita conmigo. Me gustaría que todos lo hicieran esta semana si es posible. Por favor, avísenme si tienen alguna pregunta. 

 

 

Estudios Sociales: La próxima semana, terminaremos varias tareas relacionadas con la civilización azteca, incluyendo la lectura guiada y las historias aztecas. Los estudiantes también tendrán una prueba al final de la semana. Asegúrense de repasar los apuntes con sus hijos en casa. También se publicará un repaso para la prueba en Canvas para ayudar a los estudiantes a prepararse. En clase, también completaremos actividades adicionales de repaso para el examen. Como recordatorio, si tienen hilo sobrante que deseen donar, se lo agradeceríamos mucho. El color no importa. 

 

Además, si compran zapatos y tienen cajas de zapatos, por favor, guárdenlas. Las usaremos para una actividad en clase en mayo.

Ciencias: Continuaremos con la Unidad 3, Lección 4: Tipos de fuerzas. Aprenderemos sobre la presión y cómo se utiliza en la construcción. Esta será nuestra última lección antes del examen con apuntes abiertos de la Unidad 3: Lecciones 1-4. 

 

 

PACK: Esta semana, como continuación de la presentación de trabajos, crearemos un presupuesto. Los estudiantes recibirán algunas facturas típicas de adultos: una hipoteca, el teléfono celular, la compra de alimentos para una semana y el pago del auto. Los estudiantes crearán un presupuesto basado en el trabajo que seleccionaron y luego lo presentarán a la clase. 

 

 

STEM: Esta semana en STEM, los estudiantes completarán sus proyectos de puentes de palitos de helado el lunes y el martes. Los puentes se someterán a pruebas de resistencia el miércoles y el jueves para ver qué tan bien soportan las fuerzas aplicadas. Para los estudiantes ausentes, las instrucciones para una tarea alternativa están disponibles en Canvas. Este es un proyecto práctico y divertido que permite a los estudiantes ver las fuerzas en acción y aprender tanto de los éxitos como de los fracasos.
