Dear Families, 

As we move into February, we’re excited to share some important updates and upcoming events at KMS. This month brings opportunities for students to give back, show school spirit, and stay engaged in their learning. As a reminder, students continue to go outside for lunch, so please be sure they are dressed appropriately for the weather. Thank you, as always, for your continued support and partnership!  

Fundraiser for Clean Water (Feb. 2–12): 
Our school will be hosting a fundraiser to support WHO Lives, an organization working to end the global water crisis. Students may bring donations to their Advisory teacher from February 2–12. The Advisory class in each grade that raises the most money will earn a sweet treat party on February 20. We will also host a Hot Cocoa Bar during lunch on Wednesday, February 4 ($1 cocoa, $2 treats). Thank you for your support! 

Please also note the following upcoming dates: 

• February 2nd: Boys Basketball “Blackout”, Games start at 4:30 pm 

• February 2nd: Start of the WHO Lives Fundraiser (February 2-12) 

• February 4th: Boys Basketball, Games start at 4:30 pm 

• February 12th: School Dance / PAWS 

• February 12th: Parent-Teacher Conference Open House 5:30 – 7:30 

• February 13th: No School 

• February 16th: No School 

Here are a few specifics: 

English: Students will work on revising their Response to Literature essay before submitting their final draft. The due date for this essay is February 3. Please note that the deadline to submit is February 20. I will not accept submissions beyond this date. I am allowing students who finish the revision process early to participate in a read-in on Monday/Tuesday. They are welcome to bring their favorite book, a small throw or something cozy, so they can read quietly as everyone wraps up the writing process. Finally, at the end of the week, students will take a practice ISAT.

Math: We'll apply our fraction skills to solve real-world problems. We'll also review writing and evaluating expressions with variables. All of our lessons are posted on Canvas and can be reviewed there from home. Students with missing assignments or needing to redo their Chapter 5 test should come see me. I'm available after school on Tuesday and Thursday this week. Please let me know if you have questions.

Social Studies: Next week, we will be starting our new unit on the Incas. Students will begin taking notes and completing a few worksheets as we learn about this fascinating civilization. Thank you so much to everyone who donated string—we truly appreciate your support, and we now have enough for our upcoming project.  If you happen to come across any shoe boxes, please hang on to them. We will be using them for a project in May. 🙂 As always, thank you for your continued support!

Science: On Monday and Tuesday, we will be working on a study guide for the Unit 3: Lessons 1-4 test. On Wednesday and Thursday, we will take an open notes test on Unit 3: Lessons 1-4.

PACK:  We just wrapped up the job survey and then budget presentation. This next week we will be getting into something a little more enjoyable for the students. They will be creating a “how-to” demonstration presentation. These are fun for me because the students get to teach their classmates anything they want. This is a weightier presentation, so they will have all next week to get it completed in class and will be presenting the following week. Presentations have to be turned in prior to the tardy bell of their respective class, the presentations have a minimum of 2 minutes that have to be met and students will be told to try to keep them under 5 minutes. So, if your student comes home and tells you they need to cook, shoot, ride dirt bikes, or do nails there is some truth to it. Please reach out with questions or concerns.

STEM: In STEM this week, students will begin exploring skyscrapers and how engineers design structures to withstand natural disasters such as earthquakes. This builds on the great work we did last week when students tested their popsicle stick bridges and observed how different designs handled applied forces. It was exciting to see their reactions as they analyzed what worked, what failed, and why—there was a lot of meaningful learning through hands-on testing, observation, and discussion. We’re looking forward to connecting those ideas to real-world engineering challenges as we move into our next unit!

Estimadas familias 

Al comenzar el mes de febrero, nos complace compartirles algunas actualizaciones importantes y próximos eventos en KMS. Este mes ofrece oportunidades para que los estudiantes contribuyan a la comunidad, demuestren su espíritu escolar y se mantengan comprometidos con su aprendizaje. Les recordamos que los estudiantes continúan saliendo al aire libre durante el almuerzo, así que asegúrense de que vistan ropa adecuada para el clima. ¡Gracias, como siempre, por su continuo apoyo y colaboración! 

Recaudación de fondos para agua potable (del 2 al 12 de febrero): 

Nuestra escuela organizará una recaudación de fondos para apoyar a WHO Lives, una organización que trabaja para poner fin a la crisis mundial del agua. Los estudiantes pueden entregar sus donaciones a su profesor tutor del 2 al 12 de febrero. La clase de tutoría de cada grado que recaude la mayor cantidad de dinero ganará una fiesta con dulces el 20 de febrero. También tendremos un puesto de chocolate caliente durante el almuerzo el miércoles 4 de febrero (chocolate caliente a $1, dulces a $2). ¡Gracias por su apoyo!
