Still Dreaming Big and Enjoying our Work

Date:  October 1, 2015

Location:  High School

Purpose/Rationale:

Part of loving what we do is knowing that what we do is important, even essential.  By defining our vision of who we want to be and how we want to be, it helps us prioritize how we focus our energy.  By focusing our energy, we find greater purpose and joy in our work.

This professional development day will provide an opportunity for teachers to take steps toward reaching their visions.  By returning to our August vision boards, we will be able to evaluate our progress and create an action plan to move forward.  The format of the day includes elements of teacher choice in what content they will learn as well as elements of accountability.  Teachers will share the content knowledge they have gained in the breakout sessions with their grade-level/department teams.

Essential Question:  How can having a vision help us enjoy our work?  What steps will we collaboratively take in order to reach our vision?

Objectives and Success Criteria:  (Deliverable)

Part One:

  • Each teacher will develop their expertise by attending breakout sessions.
  • Each teacher will be able to describe their vision for the year and several steps they plan on taking to reach that vision.

Deliverable:  Revise Vision Board, Personal Commitment Statement

Part Two:

  • In grade-level/department teams, teachers will refine their visions and plan out objectives for our Early Release Professional Development Days.  (These plans will be submitted for approval from the curriculum director and principals.)
  • As a district, teachers will build a culture of excellence and refine a vision for the year.

This is a session where you can ask questions and get some answers about AR, computer lab sign up, Destiny Library Catalog, student logins, and Wonders online...

Is it printing a certain AR report? Or maybe you're very confused with signing up for a computer lab time. Did you know that students can use their very own district login? You can set up your class for that. Maybe you would just like some time to browse your Wonders online class and do some troubleshooting there. Or maybe you'd like to search for certain topics or names of books on our online library catalog. If interested, get your questions ready... Camille and Kelly will do their best to help make this time useful for you.

Engagement with Document-Based-Inquiry- Sara Crystal

If you are looking for a way to get your students reading, thinking, and writing, DBI’s are a great format.  By using a guiding question along with interesting sources, students build literacy and content knowledge at the same time.  Some teachers might remember the St. Louis DBI and the Man Gulch Fire DBI.  This is a strategy that is both fun and rigorous.
