KIMBERLY SCHOOL BOARD MEETING

June 18, 2020

Executive Session 6:30 p.m.

EXECUTIVE SESSION: Cancelled

Regular Meeting 7:00 p.m.

The meeting was called to order by Mr. Melvin at 7:00 p.m. Present were trustees Mr. Higdem, Mr. Giles, Mr. Allen, and

Mr.Nield. Also in attendance were Mr. Schroeder, Superintendent; Ms. Searby, District Clerk; Laurie Wirtz, Business Manager; Matt Schvaneveldt, KMS Principal; Steve Hill, SES Principal; Justin White, KHS Principal; Sara Crystal, Curriculum Director; Ted Wasko, Maintenance Director; Keelie Campbell, Program Director; Patty Dame, Tech Director; and Darla Wadsworth, Transportation Director. This board meeting was held via ZOOM. 

AGENDA: Mr. Melvin moved to approve the amended agenda. Mr. Allen seconded the motion.  The motion carried 5–0.

FLAG SALUTE:  Everyone participated in the Pledge of Allegiance.

REPORTS:  None

CORRESPONDENCE: None 

FINANCIAL REPORT: Curtis Giles moved and Ryan Melvin seconded the motion to approve the May 2020 financial report and investment pool statements. Mrs. Wirtz mentioned that expenditures are down. The motion carried 5-0. 

OLD BUSINESS

EXPLORATORY SCHOOL UPDATE: Keelie Campbell updated the board on the Exploratory School reporting that they now have secured four board members and are looking for one more to join. The next item of business to tackle will be to finalize a school name. No action by the board was taken.   

NEW BUSINESS

CONSENT AGENDA: Dane Higdem moved and Ryan Melvin seconded the motion to approve the consent agenda with the following items. The motion carried 5-0.

  • Approve district invoices
  • Approve school invoices
  • Approve Food Service Expenditures
  • Approve Meeting Minutes from May 21, 2020
  • Approve use of football equipment June 14-23, 2020
  • Surplus Items – None

DISCUSSION / AGENDA ITEMS

APPROVE ADDITIONAL INVOICES:  Ryan Melvin motioned and Curtis Giles seconded the motion to approve additional invoices for May, 2020. The motion carried 5-0.

RATIFY 2020 NEGOTIATIONS: Mr. Schroeder reported that KEA negotiations closed today (06/18/20) at 5PM with 97% in favor of the KSD offer for the FY21 year. Dane Higdem motioned to approve, Ryan Melvin seconded. The motion carried 5-0.

  • FY21 KSD Offer - Mrs. Wirtz reminded the board that we will be losing $650K in state support. We will have to implement a hiring freeze and will be shifting positions to accommodate. The high school will be absorbing a 9th grade position and the middle school a .5 position. All salary schedules and years of exp. will be frozen with the exception of R1/R2/R3.
  • FY21 Instructional Salary Schedule – Frozen except for the $40K minimum for R1, R2, R3
  • FY21 Pupil Service Salary Schedule – Frozen except for $44k minimum for R1, R2, R3
  • FY21 Extra Duty Stipends Schedule – Frozen
  • FY21 Classified Salary Schedule - Frozen
  • FY21 Health Insurance – Slight increase

KIMBERLY SCHOOL DISTRICT OPERATION COVID PROTOCOLS: Remote learning committee will be meeting next week. No motion was made. This topic will be added to a future meeting date. 

REVISE FY21 SCHOOL CALENDAR TO ACCOMMODATE FOR REMOTE LEARNING: Curtis Giles motioned to approve the changes listed below to the FY21 School Calendar. Ryan Melvin seconded. The motion carried 5-0.

  • November 23&24, 2020 No School – Trade for 2 teacher flex workdays.
  • June 4, 2021 trade for August 5, 2020

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT:

  • District Summer Hours will be Tuesday-Thursday, 10AM-12PM.
  • Summer Projects – Maintenance/Custodial crew, with the help from the Transportation Dept. have been able to check off multiple projects that are normally completed in July and are ahead of schedule. Gym floors are done, as well as painting in the KHS entrance and hallways.
  • Graduation is June 27th at 1:00 PM – 6 tickets per graduate. Administration is working on final details and social distancing precautions.
  • Budget Hearing is July 7th, 2020 at 7PM
  • Good Stories to Share: Nine retirees were honored at the KSD retirement dinner on June 16th in the KHS commons. A special thanks to our very own, Roxi Mumm and her food service staff for catering the event. Keelie Campbell spoke about KSD receiving  4 - $200 grocery store gift cards from an anonymous donor who used their stimulus check to purchase the gift cards for families in need.

PERSONNEL REPORT: 

Chad Allen moved and Curtis Giles seconded the motion to approve the personnel report, as well as, release employee X from probation. The motion carried 5-0.

LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORTS: Summer. No reports.

ADJOURNMENT: Curtis Giles moved and Ryan Melvin seconded the motion to adjourn the meeting at 8:59 PM. The motion carried 5-0.
