Standards are statements that describe what students should be able to do by the end of the grade/course.
Our district (and state) uses the Idaho Core to guide our instruction in mathematics and in literacy. Literacy includes reading, writing, language, and speaking & listening. In grades 6-12, there are literacy standards that are specific to content areas. For example, students will learn how to read graphs and diagrams while in science class.
In addition to the Idaho Core standards, we are also guided by Idaho Content Standards. These include social studies, science, humanities, etc. and are addressed specific courses. (These are integrated in the elementary school.)

Wanting to be on the forefront of the educational field, our teachers also consider instructional standards that are developed by National Associations of Educators when designing curriculum.
